Greener Oconomowoc -
Community Garden
The
environmental group “Greener Oconomowoc” has teamed with the City of
Oconomowoc to open a community garden on the grounds of the Utilities
Department located at 815 S. Worthington Street. The garden will have
10’ x 10’ plots for rent. Residents may rent up to two plots. The cost
for each plot is $25.00. Only organic practices will be used; meaning no
synthetic fertilizers, toxic pesticides, non-organic mulch etc… Water
will be available and a hose and sprinkler head will be provided for all
to use. A fence will be built around the garden plots to keeps wildlife
from nibbling the garden produce. A garden mentor is available for
novice gardeners wanting planting advice. The garden is scheduled to
open May 28, 2011. If the garden is tilled, plotted, and a fence is
erected before then, gardeners will be notified of an earlier opening
date.

STREET TREE MAINTENANCE
PROGRAM
The definition
of a City street tree is any tree or woody vegetation that lies within
the public right-of-ways and alley right-of-ways. The City of Oconomowoc
Parks and Forestry Division are responsible for maintaining all of the
street trees in the City right-of-way areas between the sidewalk and the
street curb. The department maintains over 2,000 street trees and many
additional parks trees, green space trees and other City-owned property
trees.
Street tree
pruning and tree removals are scheduled during the winter months and late
summer to early fall. The Superintendent of Parks and Forestry marks and
schedules removal or pruning of City-owned hazardous trees and branches
deemed necessary for public safety as time permits. The department tree
pruning schedule is on a six-year cycle according to aldermanic
districts. There are four aldermanic districts within the City and tree
pruning takes place in one district at a time for one and a half years.
The City of
Oconomowoc Parks and Forestry Department grinds all tree stumps from tree
removals with top priority going to tree removals done from the previous
year. Stump grinding takes place in the spring and fall each year and
consists of grinding the stump below ground level, removing the grindings
and then adding topsoil, grass seed and straw. The homeowner is
responsible for watering the newly seeded areas.
Please do not
perform any tree maintenance on any City-owned street trees. If you have
a tree pruning or tree maintenance request, please fill out the
FORESTRY MAINTENANCE REQUEST FORM or pick one up at our Parks,
Recreation and Forestry office at 121 S. Silver Lake Street. Trees on
private property are maintained by the owners. If you suspect there is a
hazardous street tree, please report it to the Superintendent of Parks
and Forestry at (262) 569-2180.
STREET TREE PLANTING PROGRAM
Trees have
many benefits. They provide shade to cool us down on hot days, reduce
energy costs, improve the quality of the air we breathe, improve the
values of our homes and beautify our neighborhoods. The City of
Oconomowoc Parks and Forestry Division regulates the planting and
selection of street trees in the City right-of-way between the sidewalk
and the street curb according to the City of Oconomowoc Urban Forestry
Municipal Ordinance chapter 8A found on our website. Street tree
planting done by our department is scheduled every October with priority
order starting with street tree replacements from previous street tree
removals, street trees that have died from previous plantings, City-owned
tree removals, and then homeowner requests for street trees to be
planted.
If you would
like street trees to be planted in the right-of-way areas in front of
your home by our department, please fill out the
STREET TREE PLANTING REQUEST FORM or pick one up at our office at 121
S. Silver Lake Street and return it by September 1st for tree
planting consideration in the current year. Please refer to the document
STREET TREE RECOMMENDED SPECIES LIST for a suitable selection of
hardy street trees that can withstand urban tolerant conditions. There
is no charge to the homeowner for the tree or tree planting, the
homeowner is responsible for watering the tree(s), and the City maintains
ownership and performs maintenance throughout the life of the tree(s).
Please do not plant street trees in the right-of-way areas on your own as
this creates many future maintenance problems for our department.
Priority for planting street trees will be given by the date the request
was received by our department and there is no guarantee that you will
receive a street tree in that given year.
If you cannot
wait for the City to plant a street tree and you would like to plant a
street tree on your own, please review the
STREET TREE PLANTING PERMIT APPLICATION FOR HOMEOWNERS THAT WANT TO
PURCHASE AND PLANT THEIR OWN TREE This form must be
filled out and returned to our office before tree planting takes place.
This document can also be picked up at our office at 121 S. Silver Lake
Street.

EMERALD ASH BORER
Emerald ash borer is an exotic beetle
that was
discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in the summer of 2002.
Emerald ash borer probably arrived in the United States on solid wood
packing material carried in cargo ships or airplanes originating in its
native Asia. It is a destructive insect responsible for killing
millions of ash trees and
was found in southeast Wisconsin in
August of 2008. The City of Oconomowoc Parks, Recreation and
Forestry Department is proactively checking ash trees for this
destructive insect and is in the process of implementing an emergency
response plan to be prepared when this insect arrives. If you
suspect that your ash tree has an infestation, please refer to the
website
www.emeraldashborer.info
as it contains key information on what the insect looks like, who to
call, etc.
